In conversation with Shakespeare’s The Tragedy of Macbeth, Enter Macbeth. centers on Romeo, a long-time actor portraying Macbeth, as his plans for fame are thrown wildly off-course by Desdemona, the female lead of the show. When Romeo discovers that Desdemona has killed the director of their play, this comedy character must find his footing in a new dramatic setting as he decides in the spur of the moment to help Desdemona cover up her crime. Desdemona’s plight takes a different stab at the question of what committing a murder does to your psyche, as she did not do so out of envy or blind ambition as her character Lady Macbeth had done, but as a sort of self-defense against her domestic abuser. Both characters must try to cover their tracks and continue living a normal life as each of their mental states deteriorate.
